Receiving more hours of sunshine per year than any other capital city, Perth is ideal for sporting and recreational activities. The sparkling Swan River and Indian Ocean offer swimming, fishing, yachting, scuba diving, canoeing and plenty more. Take one of Sullivans free bicycles and explore the great cycle tracks the city has to offer. There are also well maintained cycling paths from Perth to Fremantle along the riverside. The 400 hectare Kings Park offers picturesque gardens, walking and cycle tracks and picnic areas with great city views.
A number of major sporting events are held in Perth each year, including the Rally Australia, Hopman Cup, the Vines Golf Classic and cricket tests. Fishing is popular all year round in Perth and a license is not required for most of the species, however you'll need to know the bag limits and fish size requirements - you can pick up a copy of a free guidebook outlining this from most fishing and tackle shops.
For the more adventurous, parasailing may be your cup of tea. Perth's parasailing company is located beneath the Narrows Bridge in South Perth and operates from November to May. Try the Human Slingshot or Bungee jumping at Bungee West, next to Adventure World. Adventure World is one of Perth's best-known warm-weather attractions and is definitely worth a visit. Open from October to April there is a lot to do. Water is the main theme of Adventure World, and there is no better place to be on a hot day than on the waterslides. Make sure you allow a full day to see all of Adventure Worlds attractions.
Golf. There are a wide range of world class courses available in Perth, accessible to all at reasonable rates. There are few cities in the world where you can play surrounded by unique flora, and occasionally fauna in the forms of kangaroo's and emu's.
Museum of Western Australian Sport at Challenge Stadium, Mount Claremont showcases the achievements of sporting legends. Included are displays of Aboriginal people in sport, Western Australia's Olympians and much more. |
