FREMANTLE is a lively port is filled with history. From the original stone buildings to the colourful cafe strip along South Terrace, it is a great area to wander about and explore for yourself. Browse for hours amongst the eclectic shops, many of which are stocked with hand crafted goods, or stop for a meal at any of the wonderful cafes and restaraunts that line the streets. Visit the Fremantle Markets on the weekends to watch local artisans at work, sample some of the freshest fish you're ever likely to taste, or stock up on souveniers. While you're there, take some time to see some of Fremantle's historic buildings and museums.

The Maritime museum has a fasinating international collection of relics and information of the hundreds of boats that have met their fate along the coastline of Western Australia, some dating back as far as the 17th century.

Fremantle History Museum was originally the Swan River Colony's first lunatic asylum built by convicts in the 1860's, and is now home to the history of the building itself. It also features constantly changing exhibitions from the Fremantle community and other parts of Australia.

Shell Museum is dedicated to shells, fossils and gemstones. As well as many interesting and informative displays, there is locally made jewellery.

The Round House was built in the 1800's by Western Australia' first settlers. Originally designed as a gaol, it is now home to photographs, paintings, maps and documents of its unique history. The oldest public building in Western Australia, it offers an amazing view of Rottnest, Garden Island and Fremantle Harbour from The Gun Deck, and a cannon is fired each day at 1pm.
